What Is CPN Registration?

CPN registration is the process of formally joining the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria as a recognised member. It is open to individuals and corporate organisations involved in the computing profession in Nigeria.

Once registered, your name or organisation is entered into the official CPN register, and you receive a registration number and a certificate of registration. Every registered member, whether individual or corporate, is also required to pay an annual licence fee to renew their practitioner’s licence and maintain valid standing.

Who Can Apply?

CPN registration is open to two broad groups.

Individuals working in computing-related fields, including software developers, IT administrators, network engineers, data analysts, cybersecurity professionals, and educators in computing disciplines.

Corporate organisations that have computing departments, units, or provide IT services in Nigeria. A company does not need to be a pure technology firm. Any organisation with an active computing function can register.

The examination portal for CPN professional exams is at exams.cpnreg.ng.

Academic Qualification Route

To register with the CPN, an individual must meet certain requirements, which include possession of a recognised degree in Computer Science or any other computing-related field from an accredited institution, completion of a recognised professional certification programme in computing such as Oracle, Microsoft, Cisco, or CompTIA, and completion of the mandatory NYSC programme for graduates.

What Happens After Registration

Registration is not a one-time event. Every registered member, whether individual or corporate, is required to pay annually a licence fee to renew the practitioner’s licence and enable computing professional practice. Failing to renew before the expiration date can result in penalties and the loss of registration status.

Members are also expected to participate in Continuing Professional Education (CPE) activities to maintain good standing. CPN holds an annual IT Professionals’ Assembly (ITA) that registered members attend as part of their professional development obligations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CPN membership mandatory for IT professionals in Nigeria?

CPN holds regulatory authority over the computing profession in Nigeria, and registration is required under the CPN Act. In practice, enforcement is stronger in government and regulated sectors. Many private sector roles now list CPN registration as a requirement, particularly for senior or specialist positions.

Can I apply for CPN membership without an NYSC certificate?

NYSC completion is a requirement for Nigerian graduates who are not exempted. If you are exempt from NYSC, the exemption letter serves in place of the discharge certificate. Those who hold professional certifications such as Cisco, Microsoft, or CompTIA may have alternative qualification routes, but the NYSC requirement applies where relevant.

What is the difference between Associate and Full membership?

Full membership is the higher category and reflects complete satisfaction of CPN’s registration requirements. Associate membership is available to those who have completed a recognised computing programme but may not yet have fulfilled all requirements for Full membership, such as NYSC completion or the CPE 3 exam. Associates can upgrade to Full membership once they meet the outstanding requirements.

How do I renew my CPN membership?

Renewal is done annually through the CPN portal by paying the annual licence fee before the expiration date. Lapsed registrations attract penalties, and a member with a lapsed licence cannot legally practise under the CPN framework during that period.

Can a non-computing company register as a Corporate Member?

Yes. Corporate membership is open to organisations with computing departments or units, not only to IT companies. A bank, hospital, government agency, or manufacturing company with an active IT department can register as a Corporate Member.

How long does CPN registration take to process?

CPN does not publish a fixed processing timeline publicly. The safest approach is to submit a complete application with all required documents accurately uploaded. Incomplete applications are the most common cause of delays.

Conclusion: The Registration Is Straightforward Once You Have Your Documents Ready

CPN registration has a clear path. Get your certificates together, go to members.cpnreg.ng, fill in the form, pay the fee, and submit. The council handles the rest. The part most applicants underestimate is document preparation. Having everything scanned, labelled, and ready before you open the portal makes the process considerably faster.

For IT professionals in Nigeria who want formal recognition, access to professional development, and the standing that comes with being on the official CPN register, registration is worth doing sooner rather than later.
